הנחיות לבדיקת קולונוסקופיה עם פיקולקס (Picolax) - ד"ר ברדן (אנגלית)

Dear Patient

The success of the colonoscopy depends on bowel clearance.

To ensure optimal results, it is important to keep the following instructions:

If you take anticoagulant medications like Aspirin, Plavix, or anti-inflammatory drugs (Advil, Voltaren, Ibuprofen…) it should be stopped a week before the colonoscopy, after consulting your family doctor.

Other medication should be taken as usual.

3 days before the procedure

A low residue diet is recommended 3 days before the procedure.
Avoid fruits, vegetables, granola, whole wheat bread, and any other high fiber products. You could eat white bread, pasta, eggs, dairy products, rice, pilled potatoes, beef, chicken, fish, and clear soup.
It is important to drink a lot, any kind of drink (but squeezed juice).

Three days before the colonoscopy, you should take one tablet of Laxadine 5 mg (mild stool softener).

Two days before the colonoscopy

You should take  another tablet of Bisacodyl 5 mg

The evening before the procedure

Picolax package contains 2 sachets. The first sachet should be taken on the evening before the procedure, around 19:00. Mix the contents of one sachet in a cup of cold water.
Stir for 2-3 minutes and drink the solution. If it becomes too hot, wait until it cools. Thereafter drink at least 12 cups of clear fluids, preferably water, at least 2 liters within 4 hours.

Day of the procedure

No solid food is allowed. You could have coffee, tea, juice (not squeezed), yogurt…
The second sachet is taken around 11 AM. Stir its contents in a glass of water, wait till it cools, and drink. Drink at least 12 cups of clear fluids within 4 hours.
3 hours before your appointment stop taking any fluids.

The procedure is done at the Gastrointestinal Institute which is located on the ground floor at the Herzelia Medical Center.
Please check-in 30 minutes before your appointment.
It is important to come with an escort since sedation medications are given throughout the procedure
